A evening with The Butts Young Leaders and Our Financial Literacy Talk

One of the most rewarding aspects of our mission is to offer financial literacy talks that not only teach the fundamentals of managing money, but also equip young people with the skills they need to thrive in both the digital and personal aspects of their financial lives. An important element of the talks is sharing information around Fraud Awareness. Vishing, romance scams and Money Muling are discussed to ensure that our young people don’t become victims of these crimes.

Recently, we had the privilege of partnering with The Butts Young Leaders and the Fr. McGrath Center to facilitate one of our financial literacy presentations. This was an exciting opportunity to connect with a group of engaged and eager young individuals, and we took it a step further by inviting them to our branch for a hands-on experience.

Bridging the Gap: Digital and Personal Interaction

In today’s world, digital banking is second nature to many young people. Mobile apps, online transactions, and managing finances from the comfort of a smartphone have become an everyday norm. But as we’ve discovered, there are other skills that often need more attention—skills that aren’t as easily learned from a screen.

During the planning of our event, we had a fascinating conversation with Thomas, the group facilitator. While the youth were well-versed in the digital space, some expressed challenges with face-to-face interactions, particularly when it came to approaching a staff member to ask for help or make a request. It made us reflect: Is this a gap in social skills that some of our younger generations face? With so much focus on digital advancements, personal communication can sometimes take a backseat.

It’s not uncommon for today’s youth to feel comfortable navigating digital platforms but hesitant to engage in real-life conversations. This raises an important question—how can we as a credit union help young people bridge the gap between the convenience of digital tools and the necessity of personal interaction in banking?

A Warm Welcome and Hands-On Experience

We were thrilled to welcome The Butts Young Leaders into our branch, offering them a chance to not only attend a financial literacy talk but also participate in the process of opening accounts and engaging with our staff directly.

Our team made sure to create a relaxed, welcoming environment. There were doughnuts, spot prizes, and plenty of opportunities for the group to ask questions about the banking process. What was particularly rewarding was seeing how engaged and interested the group was.

The Future of Financial Literacy

The day was an invaluable reminder of the importance of blending the digital and personal aspects of financial services. While it’s essential to embrace the digital tools that make banking convenient, it’s equally important to empower our youth with the interpersonal skills. Whether it’s making a simple inquiry at the counter or asking for help with a financial product, these are essential skills that will carry them through their financial lives.

At St. Canice’s Credit Union we are proud to offer financial literacy talks that touch on both the practical and the personal. We are excited to have The Butts Young Leaders as part of our credit union family and look forward to seeing them grow into active members who will save, bank, and learn with us.
