Community Connect awards funding to Irish Country Roads & Culture Trails

Irish Country Roads & Culture Trails

At the turn of the last century, at a time when the humble bicycle was regarded as somewhat of a wonder in Rural Ireland, a man named William Bulfin from Derrinlough, Co. Offaly, braved the sometimes-hazardous weather conditions and rough terrain of the Irish countryside to complete a three thousand mile round trip on his brand new High Nelly bicycle. Bulfin wrote “Rambles in Eireann” a travelogue about this unique adventure that encapsulated the rich beauty of the Irish landscape and the importance of our own heritage. Having completed this unique journey, Bulfin could be regarded as a pioneer of Irish High Nelly cycling. Now a group of High Nelly cycling and Heritage enthusiasts from Durrow has come together to pay tribute to this great man and his unique adventure.

We were delighted to be able to award Irish Country Roads & Culture Trails €2,500. Pedal Vintage – Durrow Community Bike Hire Scheme is a not-for-profit community enterprise scheme operating under the auspices of the umbrella group, Irish Country Roads & Culture Trails. Their overarching objective is to create a “community of leisure cyclists” in their local area, leading to the designation of Durrow as a Community/Family Cycle Hub. They currently have a fleet of 18 leisure bikes for hire to the local community and visitors to Durrow. Their current project objective is to “follow leisure cycling trends” with the purchase of 4 additional electric bikes. The addition of electric bicycles to their current leisure bike fleet will enhance their offering while also keeping up to date and relevant.

We look forward to seeing their new project in action and wish them the best of luck.
